| Invading Rochester |
[Aug. 14th, 2009|09:07 pm] |
|
We're making our annual trek up to the Conway Corn Roast, stopping in Rochester along the way. We'll be up in town Wednesday night through Saturday morning, September 2nd-4th, then heading down to the Southern Tier to spend quality time with family and gorge ourselves on sweet corn. Hopefully we can get a Gathering together (Moof has graciously volunteered to host) since there's so many people we want to see! |

| Alyssa discovers music |

| | accomplished | ] | Alyssa has suddenly developed an intense interest in music. It cam out of nowhere; one day she couldn't care less, the next she was begging for CDs to listen to. Greg gave her Moving Pictures to listen to for a while. After she was done, Alyssa announced that she loves Rush and just has to listen to more!
What about all the teeny bopper groups that have been packaged up for marketing to her age group? She hates them. More rock music please.
Oh yeah. |

| | optimistic | ] | Time to try out Taekwon Do. A local place is offering a trial month for $5- can't beat that. It's a complete belt mill, but they offer a lot of different class times and I can go to the same class with Alyssa. I miss kung fu, but at least I'll still get to kick and punch things. |

| | disappointed | ] | As you may have heard from hubby's earlier post, Alyssa made the First in Fitness team for her school. She came in first in her grade on several events and chose to do the mile run for the team. They compete against the top students from the rest of the county on March 11.
Yesterday she jammed her toe pretty badly in soccer camp. We found out today that it's a fracture, and she's out for 3 to 4 weeks minimum. No more soccer camp. No First in Fitness team. :-( |

| | giddy | ] | Obama came to Raleigh yesterday to Get Out The Vote for NC, and I was there!
I signed up to volunteer for the event and at 7:30am carpooled into the city with a group of women who have been regular volunteers for a long time. They instantly adopted me as one of there own and instructed me to stick with them, which turned out to be a good move. We worked the "VIP" section and ended up getting pretty close to the podium for the speech. Not that I had a great view, mind you, because everyone was standing for the outdoor event. I never get to see much if there's even one row of people in front of me, but I did catch several glimpses whenever those in front of me leaned in just the right way. Next time: work the disabilities section because they get to sit down :-)
Anyway, there was about 28,000 people, lots of energy, and lots of fun. It's neat to witness future history. |

| Visit to Rochester |
[Jul. 28th, 2008|07:38 pm] |
Fair warning, we'll be invading Rochester from August 27th through September 2nd! Sunday and Monday are reserved for the annual Conway Cornroast, but otherwise we'll be hanging around our old haunts and would love to see our friends. Let us know if you'll be around! |

| Our first 4th |
[Jul. 5th, 2008|08:57 am] |
Excited to celebrate our first Fourth of July in NC, we packed up a cooler full of food and drinks, lawn chairs, glow stock, bug spray, sunscreen, blanket, changes of clothing, etc. etc. - approximately half our house. The weather forecast promised us a clear night, the last one for the next week or so. Off to Regency Park we went and got there at 4:30, just in time to get a coveted parking spot in the Preferred Parking. Good thing, considering the 100lbs. of stuff we needed to lug in with us.
The venue is beautiful, an amphitheater set in a wooded area next to a lake where the fireworks would be set off. At the back, there are actually tables under a covered area available for rent right next to the food area and restrooms. There were free tatoos and inflatable rides for the kids, a water tag area, a misting tent for keeping cool, and plenty of food. The lines for the inflatables were pretty long, but Alyssa got to ride a mechanical bull a couple of times. We enjoyed a live performance of the North Carolina Symphony, with growing anticipation of the main event.
And then, with ten minutes to go until the show began, Mother Nature had a change of plans. The wind picked up, there were a few flashes, then a crack of thunder to confirm our growing fears of what was to come, and we hightailed it back toward the car. Then the skies opened up and put the final kabosh on the evening's celebrations.
Needless to say, it was highly disappointing, waiting in 90 degree heat for 5 hours only to have to go home sans fireworks. They were postponed until today, but the forecast is calling for more storms tonight. I guess we're going to have to settle for sparklers in the driveway this year. |

| May Update |
[May. 26th, 2008|08:55 am] |
As usual, no major events to report, but a smattering of little things:
Mother's Day was great. Alyssa decided that my cards would be hand made this year, and made one for herself and one for Greg to give me. Along with some sweet Mother's Day sentiments, Alyssa's card thoughtfully contained a pre-scripted response for me to recite to her (Thank you Sweetie! You're the best daughter ever and you can have all the deserts you want!). The card she made for Greg to give to me had a slit in it so that Greg could put a dollar bill in. She had also picked out a box of Godiva chocolates to give to me, no doubt knowing that Mommy would of course share them with her.
The weather here has been gorgeous, in the 70's and occasional low 80's, so I finally got around to completing the mulching project. The flowers I platned are miracurously still alive. Now to attempt to get some grass growing in the many bare patches in the front. We're actullay above the norm for rainfall so far, so hopefully I'll be able to water the new grass long enough to get it going.
Alyssa has been doing increasingly well at soccer, even scoring a goal in the last scrimmage. She's playing in a tournament this Saturday, and she'll be going to soccer camp in August. She's lost interest in basketball, which is no surprise given her height disadvantage. Soccer looks to be something she'll stick with.
I still haven't found an activity for myself. I've been trying to come up to speed on my area of focus as fast as possible, and it's been like standing in front of a fire hose. I think I'm getting the hang of it finally and things are starting to settle down. There are still some odd hours as our group is spread across multiple time zones, but I'm finally learning to sift the real emergencies from the rest, so there aren't so many evening and weekend hours. I think I'll attempt the kung fu classes I've been eyeing.
We've secured our plane tickets for a trip to Rochester over Labor Day weekend for the Conway Corn Roast. We'll be up from the Wednesday before through the Tuesday after, so hopefully we'll get to see friends as well as family and get our fix of some of the restaurants we miss (Philip's, here we come!). |

| April update |
[Apr. 27th, 2008|08:14 am] |
Going day after day through mostly the same routine, it's eay to let time slip by and forget to post.
We're in the thick of spring here, with temps swinging from the high 60's through the low 80's, mostly in the 70's. We've been getting a decent amount of rain which has thankfully been easing the drought, but unfortunately it appears to be timed to hit on the weekends. Yesterday was finally dry enough to get some yard work in, so I went nuts on the front flower bed. I pulled out all the abhorrent pine straw that seems to be so popular down here- I can't figure that out since it makes an ideal home for black widows and fire ants. I got some plants to fill in the big bare spot that was formerly occupied by plants that died off during the drought. I picked out just a few plants to start with; some green leafy things that like part sun and some begonias for some color. I discovered that digging holes in hard-packed clay isn't exactly a picnic. I also discovered that I have no clue as to what "make a water basin" in the directions means. I further discovered that, after many hours of putting a small flower bed in order, resulting in many sore muscles and an aching back, that I detest gardening and for the life of me can't fathom why some people enjoy this sort of thing. Today: the mulch. Oy.
The big 4-0 came and went quietly, just a quiet dinner out with the family, some flowers and a new Blu-Ray player from my honey. Someone at work noted that, out of 73 employees at our office, there are 4 women, all with April birthdays. There was a subsequent e-mail thread that went on all morning of people trying to calculate the odds of that happening.
I have now joined that popular statistical group from the past political seasons: the Soccer Mom. Alyssa has joined a soccer league and seems to have quite a talent for it. She's made some great stops as goalie and has a heck of a kick. The only downside is dragging ourselves out of bed at 6am on Saturdays for a few of the games.
Other notes: Hubby and I are still enjoying our respective work, we finally put in new carpeting downstairs, and we're slowly building friendships with our neighbors. I'm heading out to see Forbidden Kingdom with some friends today, since Greg volunteered to stay home with Alyssa.
I guess, in short, life is busy but good. |

We got a special treat Thursday- the Garth Fagan Dance Company came to Raleigh to perform! I got to see a couple of my favorite pieces plus some new stuff. I wasn't sure how enthusiastic the audience around these parts would be, but the dancers got plenty of cheers and a rousing standing ovation, just like at home.
In other good stuff, we've come into our first Spring down here. Everything's blooming like crazy, it's absolutely gorgeous, and we're starting to see temps in the 60's and 70's. I hear tell it'll be like this through May. I think I could get used to this! :-) |

| | sore | ] | So Alyssa had her final basketball practice last night, at which the coach invited us parents to scrimmage against the girls. Having watched the games from the bench every week, it certainly looked like a lot of fun. Our game started, and 30 seconds later I was wheezing and gasping for breath, wondering just how the hell these girls ran full tilt up and down the court for an hour every week. Needless to say, I am a hurting unit today. I did actually manage to get a basket somehow. But oh, the cost! |

| Head pounding on desk week |
[Feb. 10th, 2008|08:54 am] |
For about a week and a half, I've been unable to get a non corrupt driver to build so that I could begin testing my 120 files worth of changes for my first project at work. We tried reimaging my test machine, redoing my build environment on two different machines, and scouring my environment to figure out what was different. Even drivers built and tested on another machine failed on my test machine.
As it turns out, nothing was wrong with my build environments, test machine or even my extensive changes. The culprit? A bad flash drive. Every time I copied drivers to the test machine, they got corrupted. I suppose it's karma for bragging about how easy it was to get a build going! |
